 Japanese: Mom English: Mother Airdates Japan: October 18, 2003 USA: November 20, 2004 UK: Unknown Australia: Unknown Synopsis: The older Ed + Al are doing a book search and find an old intro to Alchemy. The back starting now starts. Ed + Al are with a young girl called Winry. The do her some Alchemy to make a doll but seeing this upsets her. It is explained to Winry that they didn't want to scare her. Aunt Pinako says she is suprised about how the boys can do Alchemy but say they are 'his sons.' The boys walk with their mum and say they understood their fathers books. Their mum lets them into the study where they head for the books. We find out their dad left their mum and she misses him. The boys make her little toy animals for her. Ed's is perfect, Al's isn't as good but she says they are definatly 'his kids'. Ed runs off to the hill and Al follows. Ed says that dad made mum sad so that he doesn't like their father for this. They go to Winry's house where she is crying. Her parents have died in a war. Ed says people can be revived and Aunt Pinako says to stop talking about it as it's forbidden. The boys are carring food in baskets to go home when they arrive they find their mum lying on the floor very ill. The boys go into the study and do a mass mail out to various contacts in the hope of letting their dad know their mum needs him. They are in their mums room she asks Ed to do a ring of flowers for her just like their dad used to before she then dies. Her funeral is held her name: Trisha Elric. Ed says they will survive as they will try to bring her back by Human Alchemy. Even though it is forbidden and comes up in their dads notes. Ed is sure to continue but Al isn't. The 'Human Make Up' is brought together but a soul is needed. Ed says their blood should be suffice in being an equal exchange which is needed for Alchemy. So they each give a small amount of blood. Outside there is a storm and a man (Roy Mustang) senses something foul in the air. The Alchemy from Ep1 one is seen again but it now shows Al been taken away and only Ed's leg gone. Ed sacrifices his arm to get Al's spirit to the suit of armour nearby. Al takes him to Aunt Pinako + Winry to help his brother. Shortly after Roy arrives saying he is a State Alchemist (Lt Colonel Roy Mustang) and that he is answering the boys letter about their father. He is surprised they survived a human transmutation and that they should visit him. He then leaves. Winry and Aunt treat Ed and Ed tells them he wants automail (metal arm + leg) they agree and Ed is in pain as he has to be concious throughout the operation but says it's nothing to what Al must be feeling. The boys are on the train. Al wants to be a state Alchemist but Ed says no it was all his fault and that he'll do it. Al says he'll go with his brother to the end. The episode ends with the boys burning the family home down as their is no turning back.
