Okay... you're a newbie webmaster now-a-days, right? Don't feel bad - everyone is a newbie at one point or another. The object of being a newbie webmaster is to leave that stage and become a well known and respected webmaster. And how do you do that? Well, here we've compiled a few tips for you. A) Have a good layout. You know you've seen it, it's the freewebs site with the default layout. Most of the time, they're ugly as all get out. Believe it or not, a ugly site will turn away visitors. An easy way to remedy your ugly layout situation is to learn HTML and build your own! Or if you really don't feel like doing that, you can always download a free template somewhere. Plenty of sites have them up, so why not try them out? B) Don't give up. This really should be A, because it is one of the most important aspects of being a webmaster. You just can't give up when something goes wrong, you have to hold your head high and continue on. There really isn't all that much you can do to combat the bad, so just go with it... it'll just lead you to victory in the end. Pull an Ash and go against the odds. :D C) Content. How can this be stressed even more? You need to have some sort of content before you'll start to get continuous visitors. Contray to popular belief, writing content does not equal suicide. Just sit down for a couple hours one day and write, and soon enough you'll have a large ammount of content to brag about to your fans. They'll love you for it! D) Plan. A website can be compared to a big project for school, except that you don't have a due date. You want to do it over longer periods of time, so that you don't bore or kill yourself with it. Sure, you can spend a full day working on it, but if you spend a week straight working on the site you'll want to destroy it by the end. And trust me, destroying a site isn't all that much fun. Especially when you want to remake it a couple weeks later. =/ E) Get known. What's a site if no one knows about it? Get your site known! Join some forums and promote your site (if the rules allow it) and affiliate with people! Most small sites would die to have a new and upcoming site affiliate with them... remember, this isn't a race, it's a network. And if the network works together, lots can happen. And then again, you can't forget topsites! They're another great way to get your site known! F) URLs. Got a super long URL that is impossible to remember? Then get rid of it by grabbing yourself a redirect! Dot.tk has a pretty nice one! Remember, long URLs are an evil to the fans, they like short and simple ones. And wouldn't you like a short one too? G) Search engines. Most users do come from search engines, like Google and Yahoo! It really does help to get your site listed into there, it can really help boost up your hits! H) Offer something new and unknown! Everyone knows who Ed is really, if they're going to a FMA site... so it'd be a pretty good idea to get something that they don't know for sure. Game stuff helps out a lot! Polls and a forum of your own are also a great way to give the users something that they've never seen before! I) Be nice to the fan. Most fans hate background music, crappy layouts, pop-up heaven... all that fun stuff. So do them all a favor and keep it off your site! J) Help out everyone. See that tiny little site that looks really promising? Help it out! When they've become big and powerful, who are they gonna thank? You! It's not all that hard to get a good site going... so hopefully these tips helped out a bit! |
